Read the text below carefully and answer the questions that follow it. Use your own words as far as possible.

Diabetes (diabetes mellitus) is a chronic disease that occurs when the pancreas, one of the organs in our bodies does not produce insulin or when the body can’t use insulin effectively. Insulin is a hormone that regulates blood sugar levels in our bodies. We get glucose (sugar) in many forms from the food that we eat. When there is too much sugar in our blood, serious problems develop over time.

Diabetes is a major cause of blindness, kidney failure, heart attacks and other heart diseases, stroke and lower limb amputations. There are different types of diabetes namely: type 1, type 2 and gestational diabetes. Type 1 diabetes is usually genetic. If other people in your family have

the disease, you may get it as well. Symptoms are: thirst, frequent urination, hunger, fatigue, blurred vision.

Type 2 diabetes often starts in adulthood and is associated with obesity and life style. The symptoms are as same as for type 1 diabetes. Gestational diabetes occurs during pregnancy (gestation). It can affect the mother’s and baby’s health. It often disappears after the baby is born. Testing during pregnancy is very important.

Diabetes is a disease for which there is no cure. However, diabetes can be controlled by: eating more healthily, exercising and losing weight. Some people also need medication (insulin) to control their diabetes. The disease needs regular monitoring (checking). Balanced meals are important for people with diabetes. They need to avoid sugar and eat proteins and lots of fresh vegetables every day. They can also eat some fruits.
